Science

Our aim in teaching Science is to provide a fun and stimulating environment in which all pupils will develop enquiring minds. Emphasis is placed on pupil’s ability to communicate their knowledge using appropriate vocabulary and problem solving skills. They are also encouraged to question what they are experiencing.
In the primary department pupils follow a Science Curriculum which is based on the QCA guidelines and schemes of work with individual targets based on P levels. A wide range of teaching strategies and styles are used, including whole group, small group and individual sessions, to ensure that every pupil receives their full entitlement to the Science curriculum. Educational visits are an integral and enjoyable part of Science and are used to support the lessons.
At Key Stage 3 the Science Curriculum is delivered as part of a topic based curriculum whilst still being delivered according to QCA guidelines and schemes of work. Each term, teaching groups in Key Stage 3 follow a theme and all teaching, including Science, is based on that theme. This gives a great opportunity to link the teaching of Science to other subjects across the curriculum.
At Key Stage 4 students start following the ASDAN ‘Transition Challenge’ course. In each of the five modules in this course there are Science based activities which are linked to the statutory programme of study for Key Stage 4. Students are encouraged to use their scientific knowledge they have learnt for practical activities. For example, students have used their knowledge of what plants need to grow to produce their own vegetables, which they then sold on their enterprise stall.
