Maths at The Redway School is fun!

We develop our students’ natural urge to explore from an early year with problem solving being a key principle in our Early Years department. We provide enabling environments inside and outside.  Our students have a very well equipped outdoor facility which includes deep sand pits, water features and an extensive range of tactile equipment.

In our Primary Department we continue our enjoyment of Maths which takes a more formal timetable structure with a maths lesson being part of the daily planning. Students have a constant focus on number work in a variety of both play and practical situations.

We follow the principles of the new Numeracy Strategy in a thematic approach. So we have wonderful opportunities to use Macbeth, Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat, and The Odyssey, to name a few, as vehicles to deliver an exciting Maths programme.

Planning and development is always ongoing in the Redway and we are currently working on assessing our Key Stage 3 medium term planning to fit in with our termly theme.

Students have access to our wonderful Mile Room (Multisensory interactive learning environment), dark rooms and now our super hydrotherapy pool with a new lighting system where students can use switches to create their own environments learning about shape, colour, distance and measure.

We see Maths in the Redway School very much as a cross curricular subject which is reflected in our medium term planning. So every opportunity is capitalized upon to develop basic skills in Maths. This also includes our frequent outings to the local community.

When out on walks to the local lakes and canals we have fantastic opportunities to explore shapes and space in our community. Local shops and supermarkets are used to develop life and money skills.

As our students progress through Key Stage 4 and Post 16 we follow the Asdan Transition Challenge and Towards Independence accreditation schemes to focus on Maths as a life skill. So, here we have frequent opportunities to go shopping for ourselves and make snacks and drinks.

We have 2 market stalls in school on a Thursday and Friday organized by the students themselves! These sell everything from a carrot to a piece of jewellery.

Maths in the Redway is always fun with a very practical focus on our students achieving their potential enabling them to be prepared for life after school.
