Plot 200 our School Allotment
Each week during term-time, pupils from The Redway head down to Plot 200 and experience the joys of outdoor life.
Plot 200 is the school’s allotment space (at nearby Woughton on the Green), which has been tended by our students and staff for the past four years.
Complete with raised beds, a Polytunnel, herb and vegetable patch, small pond, and the unmistakable ‘little red shed,’ the allotment allows for a variety of activities to be enjoyed, from watering and weeding to growing plants and using tools. The children also help with feeding the local chickens, meet local gardeners and visit the little gardening shop on site.
The Allotment Association is very welcoming and extremely supportive – members have created a special ‘green’ compost toilet that is accessible to disabled people and a purpose-built raised bed separate to the school’s plot that allows access for wheelchair users.
Students gain a tremendous amount from such a ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ involvement – from watching nature take its course with little seedlings, to seeing the birds feed, and experiencing the changing weather patterns.
For the future, we have plans to increase the amount of paved area which will allow even greater access for all our students, and improve our raised beds and storage facilities. This will be carried out with funding from parcel freight company DHL, which has a branch in Milton Keynes. DHL has been a valued and great supporter of the school for several years.
