In Humanities this term KS3 are learning about surprises. As part of the National Heritage week one of the groups went to Milton Keynes Museum.

The first place we visited was the telephone exchange. There are lots of old telephones and switchboards that are connected to each other so you can dial the numbers and talk to a friend. The pupils were fascinated by the fact that the telephones did not all have buttons but that you had to dial the number.

The Victorian school room made an impact on the pupils too. They all sat at individual desks, when I put on my very strict school teachers voice they were all shocked. Simon then pretended to be naughty and was shown the can and had to sit using a backboard to keep him still.

The pupils also experienced life during World War II; we walked through the war time garden and went into an air raid shelter. As we shut the door it became very dark, we pushed a button and a small light came on and we heard aeroplanes and the air raid siren, then after a few moments we heard bombs dropping and exploding and then we had to wait for the all clear siren. The pupils were scared by what they heard and experienced but they took it all in their stride and some of them asked questions about why they had the shelters and what they were for.

The group were very well behaved on the trip and really enjoyed being able to touch and experience life in different times. The museum staff were very interesting and encouraged the pupils to join in, it was a great afternoon.
