Sailing Residential to the Isle of Wight
Dates: Monday 7th October to Wednesday 9th October
Students: Amanda (Post 16), Becky (Post 16) and Christopher (Secondary 2 Chestnuts)
Staff: Heather, Patrick and Graham (Caldecotte)
Monday: we left school at 9.15 and made good time on the road to Southampton. We were early and managed to catch an earlier ferry to the Isle of Wight. The crossing took us nearly one hour. We had our packed lunch on the ferry and bought chips on board!
When we arrived on the island we had to take another smaller ferry which was pulled by chains to East Cowes. We then drove to the UKSA where we meet our “skipper” and Andy who was to crew with us.
However, we first had to unload the minibus this took good team work as we had to load a trolley and push our bags down on to the pontoon and then on to our boat.
Our boat was called “Freedom”, 46 feet long! It had been named by the Princess Royal only 3 years ago. Amanda said “Wow!” when she saw the boat!.
We settled in and unpacked our bags and then went to be fitted out with our ocean sailing gear! We needed these waterproofs as the next day turned out to be cold and very wet!
We sailed around the Solent and our skipper pointed out Osborne House to us where Queen Victoria spent her holidays and enjoyed swimming there.
