Head Teacher's Updates

7th December

Saturday 7th of December 2019
Christmas has officially arrived! There was an air of excitement, full of ‘awe and wonder’ when the pupils entered school on Monday amazed by the decorations, trees and lights. As always, some pupils are so fascinated with the corridor lights in particular they just want to sit and look at them! This is usual, staff are skilled in allowing them to do so at key points during the day. Throughout the week, classes have been ‘beavering away’ in making their special goods for our...

30th November St Andrew's Day

Saturday 30th of November 2019
‘Twas the week before Christmas’ begins at The Redway School. We are still affected by sickness which has had an impact on both staff and pupils, but we have remained positive and open – which has been a challenge, but everyone rose to it. However, I would like to ask, yet again for pupils not to come in to school if they are unwell, even with a slight cold as this can impact on others – staff included. We have started practicing our Christmas songs for all three of our...

24th November

Sunday 24th of November 2019
This past week has been a challenge! Many staff, pupils and parents have been affected by the sickness virus which appears more prevalent than usual. Thank you for your support and understanding with the classes that we had to close to enable the remainder of the school to function efficiently – it’s never an easy decision but we need to ensure that we continue with our high standards of education and care at all times. We are not the only school  that has been affected by this, many other...

17th November

Sunday 17th of November 2019
We have had several different themes within school this week. At the start of the week we focussed upon Remembrance with several pupils attending the Remembrance Ceremony in Milton Keynes on Monday. Classes made ‘memory wreaths’ decorated with special things which they remember, or which help them to remember ready for assembly on Wednesday. Assembly on Wednesday was all about remembrance, but also being thankful. Those of us who were able, stood for National Anthem, we sang relevant songs...

This week, we welcomed  our new teacher Jodi, who will be leading Robins class and also some new support staff to the school. As always it was good to see the pupils back in school after the half term holiday. Over the holiday a lot of routine maintenance work has occurred from new boilers being fitted at the Transitions Department to PAT testing of all electrical equipment as well as all the PE equipment, hoists and tracking having their safety checks. I am pleased to report that all is...

This half term seems to have flown by!  We are, though all pleased that the half term holiday is here – the pupils and staff are ready for a week’s break, even though as I write this is a very wet, miserable and dreary day in Oxford. During this week, we have had a lot of training occurring in school for our staff and those from other special schools in Milton Keynes. Staff participated in essential Safeguarding Training updates, a two day Rebound Therapy Course, Team Teach Training,...

Saturday 19th of October 2019
It’s been a challenging week in school due to the high number of staff absent with illness. Thank you for your support with this when we had to close some classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, hopefully everyone is now well, and we will have a usual week. I did though have the pleasure of working with students from Transitions all day on Monday – first a morning on the trampoline, followed by a musical  sing a long afternoon where some of Brabham class came along and joined in. Some classes...

Saturday 12th of October 2019
This week was harvest week! We celebrated the harvest in true Redway style with two visits to St Mary’s Church,  where the vicar, Paul and his team were as welcoming as always. Our final harvest celebration was in the orchard on Thursday morning. All three harvest festivals were a thanksgiving for the food produce we have and how fortunate we all are.  We all enjoyed singing our favourite harvest themed songs, there was some wonderful singing and signing from some of our pupils, while...

Saturday 5th of October 2019
A major focus of this week has been our preparation for our harvest festival’s next week. We had practices of our favourite harvest songs before school and classes have been hard at work making their boxes for harvest produce. We do hope that you will be able to come along and support us, this week is one of the highlights of our school year, and is a moment of ‘awe and wonder’ as well as celebrating how fortunate we are with our fruitful harvest. Classes have risen to the challenge of...

First, thank you all for supporting both Jeans for Genes Day and also our Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday by coming along to the café, by baking cakes or just donating. We support a lot of good causes and your active involvement is very much appreciated. This week’s ever changing weather has provided us with some challenges. A classroom was flooded on Tuesday morning and then we had issues with the fans in the kitchen on Wednesday which meant that we had no gas for cooking! Everyone rose...

21st September

Saturday 21st of September 2019
This week in school we have all enjoyed the lovely sunny, weather with lots of classes enjoying their outside learning and Forest Schools work. The pleasure in the pupils faces of being outside and having fun with their learning is a credit to all the staff who strive to make every moment a positive experience. All pupils have relished in the pool being back in action – their weekly swim is often a highlight. The classes that go off site for their swim are doing very well and making progress with...

Our first full week of the new academic year – a busy one it has been too – working through the new class timetables each day is always a challenge at the start of a new school year. We are now settling back into work mode – as you will see from the photographs mark making activities, messy interactive play and visits off site – especially to the sunflower farm which all pupils enjoyed. This is also in addition to focussing back on pupil’s individual therapy needs, which...

As always, it was good to be back to a normal routine as from last Monday. Our staff training days on Monday and Tuesday ensured that we were able to cover Safeguarding requirements, with further in depth training to follow later this term. Staff also had time to prepare the classrooms and lessons ready for the return of the pupils on Wednesday. Wednesday arrived, and it was wonderful to see the happy smiling faces of the pupils returning to school. There were some very happy parents and carers...

21st July

Sunday 21st of July 2019
What a year this has been and how fast has it gone? It has been phenomenal with lots of wonderful learning opportunities and experiences for all our pupils. None of which would be at all possible without the hard work and dedication of the staff team. Their commitment to the school is highly commendable – everyone puts the pupils well-being first as well as being supportive of colleagues. The last week of the academic year – what an exciting but emotional one it has been. Another visit to...

It’s hard to believe that this is the final week of another academic year. This week has been a busy one in school with lots of class end of year visits, plus several classes walking to the splash park at Willen – what a time they had too! The photos in the Friday letter say it all and embrace all that we as a school are about. More pupils go tomorrow and I’m sure that they too will have a fantastic time. On Thursday we had our Transitions Leavers Afternoon Tea Party. Parents and...

This week has been a busy one in school – as are the next two final weeks of this academic year. It’s amazing to think that this school year is almost over – it feels that it has flown by! Thank you to everyone who came to the Summer Fete last Saturday – the hottest day of the year so far. Frances has just informed me that we raised a grand total of £2, 237.30 and as always, the 30p is very important! This money will be used to support off site activities and classroom...

30th June

Sunday 30th of June 2019
Another busy week in school – but lots of smiling, happy faces of both pupils and staff. Due to the rain on Tuesday we decided to hold our last sports morning inside, the first ever that we have held inside in the many years I have been at The Redway. However, we rose to the challenge and whilst we did not have as much space as we do outside everyone had a good time and participated well. We are very grateful for all the help we have had once again from DHL for all three of our sports...

It’s been a busy week both at school and down in Devon. The residential to The Calvert Trust was once again successful, the pupils surprised us all with their achievements and how they embraced all the challenges. This could not have been done without the support of staff from Calvert but also the school staff who accompanied the visit, as well as those back at ‘base camp’ keeping the school running smoothly. At school Di led Wednesdays assembly- all about the summer solstice with...

It’s amazing how time goes so quickly – the last half term of another school year seems to have arrived sooner than we expected. Over the holiday several safety checks on equipment or annual services have been carried out, the sad news being about the hydrotherapy pool roof’s panels. It was not an easy decision to close the pool but I had no option. Hopefully we will get this sorted sooner rather than later, we are obtaining quotes for the work and the LA are fully aware of the...

Happy Bank Holiday Weekend and Half Term Holiday! I do hope that everyone is having a good weekend and enjoying the bank holiday. The highlights of this week in school were the Early Years sports morning on Wednesday, where we were once again supported by the DHL team. A fun time was had by all and we were pleased to welcome many parents, carers and grandparents who came along to support us. Team PE supported by class staff did an amazing job – so well done to them. Friday brought along the...

It’s been a quiet week in school with everyone. We definitely made the most of the sunshine at the start of the week with a lot of off site learning occurring, about which I was pleased. Our outdoor learning activities continued, at Basil’s Barn, the allotments – off site and on site, at the orchard, as well as visits further afield and locally. Some pupils were keen to try their skills at making different items and focussed very well requiring minimum support. This week’s...

The four day week in school is always a slightly confusing one for both pupils and staff! We all thought it was Monday on Tuesday! We have had a good week, with lots of interactions between pupils as well as with staff and some wonderful engagement in learning too. I have been very pleased with what I have observed occurring in classes on my daily walks around school and in the Transitions Building.  Although we had some lovely sunshine, which we all enjoyed, the downpours we had highlighted...

What a wonderful week we have all had.  This years Healthy Living Week has been full of positivity, learning and embracing new challenges. Everyone has truly engaged in all the activities, from the long walk or cycle to Willen, to a range of activities at Caldecotte, karting, football and cheerleading to name some. Although at the end of the week there were some tired pupils and also staff, it was well worth it for the happy smiling faces on all pupils participating in the diverse activities and...

As always after a holiday it was good to see the pupils back in school on Tuesday. Everyone seemed happy to be in their usual daily routine – staff as well as pupils! Over the holiday Dawn and the cleaning team had done a wonderful job in ‘sprucing up’ classrooms all ready for this next term, before their very deep clean during the summer holidays. Sam updated some of the displays within school and  thanks to Jenny’s pre planning over the academic year we had several checks...

We said goodbye to Natasha and Michaela, who are taking up new teaching posts elsewhere and wish them both the very best. Our assemblies on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning were based around our outside...
