David enjoys a foot spa to help cool down in the heat
Saturday 24th of June 2017
What a week this has been – both in school and down in Devon where a group of pupils accompanied by staff were on a 7 night residential. Everyone was affected by the exceptionally hot weather. In school I know that a lot of water play occurred, which is great for developing pupils communication skills as well as having a lot of fun and keeping cool. Please could you all ensure that we have sun tan cream in school as well as a hat for your son / daughter. All pupils and staff who attended the...

It’s been an interesting week this week both in school and out! We were all pleased to see the pupils arrive back in school on Monday, there were a lot of happy, smiling faces, everyone appeared pleased to be back after the half term holiday. We welcomed one of our new teachers for September, Emma who is going to be with us for some of this term, getting to know the pupils and preparing for September. On Wednesday, Peter our fantastic photographer came into school and took a whole host of...

Ellie-Victoria enjoys time outside in the sunshine with the shaving foam
Saturday 3rd of June 2017
It seems surreal that we are coming towards the end of the half term holiday and that June is upon us. I hope that you all are enjoying the lovely weather and half term break. First, a bit of a catch up from the last week of school as there was no Headteachers Weekly Update. On Thursday we interviewed for a second Senior Teacher Post to join our Leadership Team. We have updated the Leadership Team ready for September in line with our growing school population. The candidates were all very good but after...

Students from Bluebells and Daffodils took part in a Swimming Pentathlon
Saturday 20th of May 2017
There has been a very happy ‘buzz’ around school this week with lots of positive things happening. First, well done to the pupils from Daffodils and Bluebells who attended a swimming competition at Stoke Mandeville Stadium with pupils from other special schools in the south. This was a first for us and they did very well. Verity and Sarah were very proud of their achievements, as were they – all the pupils loved their medals as well as being presented with their certificates in...

Healthy Living Week in school last week was a very busy and exciting one but the pupils experienced lots of different activities, including, sailing, canoeing, driving the power boat on Caldecotte Lake, karting, ice skating, tennis, World of Sound and ‘Pampering Sessions’ to name but a few of the activities! We also took over the snow dome for a couple of hours on Wednesday morning where over 40 pupils attended and had a fantastic time, loving being on the snow. Class teachers have also engaged...

I hope that everyone enjoyed last week’s Bank Holiday Weekend. This week as a result of being only 4 days seems to have flown by! This week we welcomed to school Riley – a new pupil in Bumblebees and also Helen our new teacher in the PE Department. I have every confidence that they will both enjoy being part of The Redway family. Well done to everyone who ran in the Milton Keynes Festival of Running last weekend raising funds for the school – it is very much appreciated. Buses...

Nile, Yahya and Ralfs working together in the mud kitchen
Saturday 29th of April 2017
I would like to start this week’s update by thanking everyone for all their best wishes, comments of support and sponsorship for my running of the London Marathon last weekend. It was as, always a fantastic day, the sun shone, the crowds were brilliant and the atmosphere special. Running London is a unique experience and I revelled in every minute of it (well perhaps not between miles 16 and 19 which were a bit of a struggle!) Congratulations too to George’s Mum, Sarah and also to Nikki both of...

Introducing our new friend Joshua who has joined us in Daffodils Class
Saturday 22nd of April 2017
As always it was good to welcome all the pupils back to school on Tuesday. They all appeared very happy and content to return after the Easter Holiday, as did the staff too. We welcomed our new pupil Joshua to Daffodils, - he has had a very positive start to his new learning journey at The Redway. During the holiday, lots of work has been done across school and at the Transitions Department. The pool has had a deep clean – thanks to Dawn for doing this – it sparkled on Tuesday when we...

Sumayya explores the light dome during Peter's story 'The Storm' for World Book Day
Saturday 1st of April 2017
This term seems to have flown by – it’s rather surreal to think we are now at the start of the Easter Holidays. However, this term has been a productive one with lots of positive teaching and learning happening within school as well as some special events, such as fundraising for Red Nose Day, Autism Awareness and Emily’s Star. A huge thanks goes to Sam and the café team, as well as school staff, parents and carers for their support of this. This week we said ‘Goodbye...

Saturday 25th of March 2017
Spring appears to be on its way! Everyone enjoyed the sunshine during the week, especially towards the end of it. It was good to take the pupils off site to be able to generalise skills as well as learn new ones and to observe the signs of spring arriving. During the week we interviewed for new teachers for September and we successfully recruited two new ones. We are hoping that they will be able to join us for our training day in May and also be able to spend some time in school before...

18th March

Saturday 18th of March 2017
It’s astounding to think that we only have another 2 weeks until we break up on the 31st for the Easter Holidays. Where does the time go? So please remember that at 10am on the 31st we have our end of term Easter Assembly to which you are all invited. As the school grows it does become more of a challenge to fit everyone into the space we have for assemblies but we always manage to do it! But before that we have a lot happening. Next Friday, March 24th is the last Transitions Café of the...

Maple class had their own Holi Festival this week - Millie Ann admires her colourful self!
Saturday 11th of March 2017
This week pupils have enjoyed and participated in different stories told by different members of staff as part of our Book Week focus. Teachers have enjoyed visiting other class groups and sharing a story with them and the pupils too have also enjoyed this experience. Another highlight of this week was our assembly on Friday led by Lou celebrating the festival of Holi. Not only did we sing songs with a colour and friendship theme, we used sensory lights and parachutes to create some ambience before in...

Saturday 4th of March 2017
This week has been a busy week in school with lots of good learning happening. A group of pupils went to an indoor athletics festival on Tuesday and excelled, which was pleasing to note, plus we had our tennis coach in again working with different groups of pupils. This has been very popular – thank you to Verity and the PE team for making this a positive experience for our pupils. Several staff are in the process of completing the final stages of their Forest School Course and have some great...

Our new friend Anna from Butterflies spends some time with Rachel
Saturday 25th of February 2017
After the half term holiday it was good to welcome the pupils back to the main school site. Unfortunately we had to close the Transitions Department on Monday, for reasons that I will explain later. The week was overshadowed by the sad death of one of pupils from Caterpillars – Otito, who had been very poorly and in hospital for several months. Our thoughts are with his family at this most difficult time. We did though welcome new pupils to school. Nicholas – who started in Transitions...

Ben and Hassaan spend quality time together during PSHE
Saturday 18th of February 2017
I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable half term holiday. Whilst the pupils have been on holiday there has been a lot happening in school! Throughout this week we have had contractors in school and also at the Transitions Department. Plus a team of dedicated staff have transformed and painted the ‘old secondary’ main corridor blue!  A huge thanks goes to them for giving up their holiday – I have no doubt that it looks fresher and definitely better than the yellow it was! To...

Saturday 11th of February 2017
As some of you will be aware from my Facebook post last night – ‘its been a funny old week in school .. ‘  But there have been lots of positives – Red Panda Dance came and worked successfully with several groups of pupils in a dragon dance as part of the focus on Chinese New Year. Plus the pupils have all had a really good week and there has been some excellent teaching and learning happening. It’s amazing that we are now half way through yet another academic year...

Joey hunts for minibeasts during Forest School
Saturday 4th of February 2017
It was good to be back in school on Monday after three days of mandatory training in London last week. Although having time away from school gives me time to reflect upon what we are doing as well as what we are offering our pupils, and plan, I do miss being at school and especially seeing the pupils and young people everyday. The highlights of this week have been with the PE department who have taken pupils to a basketball tournament, as well as having a tennis coach in school. Plus, all classes have...

Saturday 28th of January 2017
Happy 50th Birthday Milton Keynes! All classes have focussed on this during the week, with each department looking at Milton Keynes and the popular culture of a different decade. As expected a fun time was had by all and pupils have enjoyed visiting different places in Milton Keynes, which were and still are an important part of its development. We are aiming to put together a Redway Newsreel and a special book relating to this. Our assemblies had the theme of ‘Burns Night’, which I am told...

Although this week has been a quiet one in school it has also been a busy one! As the end of the week brought frosty mornings but sunshine we all enjoyed wrapping up warm and going outside especially at lunchtime to revitalise ourselves! There has been a lot of good teaching and learning occurring. I am currently in the process of observing all teachers and I am pleased to report that I have seen some good and outstanding lessons, with positive interaction and engagement from pupils. But this has also...

Holly and Gemma enjoying the snow - a first for Gemma!
Saturday 14th of January 2017
What an exciting week we have had in school! A pantomime and snow! Dick Whittington  - the panto was well received by pupils on Wednesday, those for whom it was not appropriate had a lovely sensory story and music session in the gym with Rachel, Jenni and Judi. Something a little different for everyone – which all the pupils enjoyed. When the snow arrived on Friday morning we all went out and enjoyed it – some of our pupils had never experienced snow before so it was a first for them...

Sunday 8th of January 2017
Happy New Year everyone. I hope that you all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. It’s amazing how quickly it goes by after a lot of preparation. Over the holiday various work has been completed at the main school site and at the Transitions Department – which I call ‘upstairs’ much to the amusement of staff! We have had a doorway built through to the toilet area for pupils in Poppies Class, which will also help with when pupils need to go to the bathroom at playtimes. The...

Busy, busy busy! That sums up this week in school! Christmas has definitely arrived! We have had lots of happy and excited children and young people in school this week. After our Christmas Concerts last week we held our two Christmas lunches and then on Thursday our two Christmas parties. It was great to see the children in their party outfits – some lovely dresses and very trendy shirts!  Santa’s Grotto also opened – which was a huge success. We have sent photographs home and...

As always everyone enjoyed themselves and a fine time was had by all. The band rose to the challenge of...

‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!’ Certainly this week Christmas has begun – we had 2 rehearsals for the concert at Christ the Cornerstone this week - - the band almost managed to keep in time and play in the same key! But all will be well on Tuesday – we always rise to the challenge. Please remember if you are coming to this concert that we ask you sit upstairs as space is very tight. Our second concert is on Thursday morning at 10:30am at St Mary’s,...

Enjoying the residential trip to The Calvert Trust, Devon.
Saturday 26th of November 2016
As many of you will be well aware this week has been the week of a four night residential at The Calvert Trust in Devon. We took a slightly larger group than usual, but everyone had a great time, rising to the challenges presented, and overcoming some fears! Lots of good teamwork, support, laughter and fun was had throughout the week. We also had an afternoon in Woolacombe, where the weather was cold but fine, some of us explored the beach, had a wander around the shops and then went for a warming...
