Helena Newbold : Co-opted Governor

My name is Helena Newbold, I have two adult children ages 24 and 18.

I am a nurse by profession and progressed to being a hospital manager.

Whilst living in France my daughter joined the French education system and I loved being a mum helper in Ecole Matinelle and as my daughter became more confident I helped at Ecole Primare with the teaching of English and especially its pronounciation.

I have been a governor and chair of governors previously in a mainstream school for eleven and a half years and hope to share my experiences.

Currently I am a Sheltered Housing Officer for Older People with Milton Keynes Council.

I am passionate about helping children which I think stems from my younger days as my mother was a teacher and fostered children. I never knew if I would wake up to find a new friend in the morning and my school holidays were spent helping to get class rooms and displays ready for the next term. School has an element of home from home for me.

I wish I could go back to school now and have fun experiencing the curriculum and learning social skills as it is taught now. I sat at my own desk without group work and not able to talk until it was break! Life after education was quite a shock.

I consider myself a people person and how they are treated and valued is very important to me, children and adults alike. I’m really looking forward to being part of The Redway community and playing my part keeping such a Special School extra special.
