Peter Markham : Assistant Headteacher

I joined The Redway School in September 1999 as a Specialist Support Assistant. With the school’s support, I was able to gain my degree in education and become a qualified teacher.

For several years I took a special interest in developing ways forward for those with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Now, as assistant head teacher I oversee the five ASD classes we have here, teaching in one of them.

The ASD team and I are here primarily for the benefit of the pupils. We constantly look at how we can enhance their daily lives, developing their active learning in a fun, structured and caring environment, using many different methods to increase their individual skills.

All staff are valued equally, whatever responsibilities they have, and their skills provide a wide range of engaging, high quality learning experiences for the pupils. It is particularly rewarding for us all to witness and celebrate the improvement in our pupils’ skills, no matter how small, as we work with them to develop their potential.

Elsewhere in my life I enjoy spending time with my family and taking our cocker spaniel out for long walks. I am an avid collector of Sci Fi memorabilia and enjoy exploring the English coast with my partner Helen.
